WEEK 11: A Reflection on Youth in the System

1. School-to-prison Pipeline
It's saddening and infuriating how this concept and system primarily targets people of color (specifically black students) no matter the age and gender. In the few videos I've seen, how some SRO's and police officers deal with these kids are undoubtedly acts of abuse and yet they get away with it because they're the authority(?!). How is it that a lot of these school system and organizations allow and feed into the racial disparity in the criminal justice system?

2. "If they end up in the justice system, it's not because the school system pushed them there."
This is a nice way of looking at how it is beneficial for schools to practice restorative justice amongst its students. I just hope that for schools with majority of their students being black (and people of color), that they are actually supporting and doing everything in their power to help them rather than doing only the bare minimum and having a restorative practice just "for show".

3. Student discipline: Punitive over restorative (most times)
A lot of teachers, facilitators, etc. choose punitive as a way of discipling their students because it is faster. Restorative practices take more time and effort. However, the latter is better and more beneficial long term.

4. Restorative Circle
I very much appreciate school organizations who employ this kind of restorative practice wherein students are given a safe space and a community to learn from their mistakes, grow to become better people and relate to their classmates who have same/ similar stories and experiences. Personally speaking, it's always good to know that when I'm feeling down and all alone in the world, that there are other people who are going through the same shit as I am and if they are out there trying to make the best out of it, then so can (should) I.

5. Stepping up and stepping back
I always believe that one quality of being a GOOD leader, teacher, friend, teammate, partner, etc. is to be able to listen and respect other people's opinions and stories. I think it is very important that kids practice this quality the sooner the better as this simple act can make a huge impact on their lives and others.
